Mahamri is a popular sweet and spiced bread in East Africa, specifically in Kenya and Tanzania. To make this delicious treat, follow these steps:
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup warm coconut milk
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon instant yeast
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cardamom, cinnamon, and salt. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, dissolve the instant yeast in the warm coconut milk and water.
- Add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. Add warm water if needed.
- Cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rise for an hour until it doubles in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and knead it again.
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a thin sheet and cut it into small triangles or squares.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium-high heat.
- Fry the mahamri in hot oil, flipping them until they turn golden brown on both sides.
- Remove the fried mahamri from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
- Serve the mahamri while still warm, either as a snack or with a cup of chai tea.
Enjoy your freshly made mahamri!
